The importance of water for your skin

Everyone knows the effects of being dehydrated, and how it impacts on the body. You feel tired, drawn, and lethargic., and the body’s metabolic rate slows down.  In extreme cases it also affects your joints, muscles, breathing and heart rate.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS IT HAS ON YOUR SKIN?

The skin is the largest organ of the body and for most people it takes a back seat on the priority list. But WHY? We have to live in our skin for a long time. It blows me away how so many of us neglect ourselves when it is so important!  By drinking plenty of water and locking in moisture externally, it allows your skin to function properly, keeping it healthy, and allowing toxins to be removed.

We have enzymes in our skin that work like Pac- Man, eating away all the dead skin and allowing healthy skin cells to be produced. But with the effects of transepidermal water loss, (known as dehydration) these enzymes cease working and cause skin conditions such as inflammation, eczema, psoriasis, and can even flare up acne and breakouts.

Our hair follicles are responsible for the secretion of our sweat glands and oil to lubricate the skin. When we are suffering from transepidermal water loss, there is no water in the skin to push the oil out evenly, resulting in clogged pores, blackheads, milia, acne, dehydrated, cysts and even dry, flaky skin. This can result in misdiagnosis and lead clients to access the wrong treatments, products, or in some cases medication, which has other negative effects in the body and can sometimes exacerbate skin problems.

Water within the skin can also reduce redness and inflammation, as it acts as a buffer. Inflammation is like a fire within the skin, and water puts the fire out, calming and cooling the skin. At a cellular level, the cells in the skin also get sluggish and don’t work correctly. This can speed up factors such as ageing, and giving the appearance of darker, thicker skin as the skin enzymes that exfoliate the skin naturally fall asleep.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

You need to drink more than 2 litres of water a day, but that alone isn’t enough, as our internal organs and systems take the majority of that. It has to come externally from home prescriptives that work synergistically with the skin and not against it. They lock in moisture at a cellular level so our skin can draw on it throughout the day, as it needs it.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

We have seen amazing results in our clinic from the use of our paramedical home prescriptives from DMK and intense in- salon treatments. It works by mimicking the body’s enzymes and how the skin naturally works, so the body doesn’t think it’s foreign and try to eliminate it. It is sourced from pure botanical ingredients and the aim is to get the skin working as it should and optimally. With the use of these treatments, we can minimise transepidermal water loss within the skin and drastically reduce the cause of inflammation, and other skin issues caused from lack of water within the skin.

It is insane how something so small can affect our body so much. It is also not the only answer. Along with a healthier diet and eating more greens and fruit, with non-farmed vitamins and amino acids, our skin can look amazing. I have seen it time and time again in my clinic, and can’t stress enough the importance of putting yourself first and looking after the skin you’re in… after all we’re in it a long time! Why not look and feel the best you can be!
