When we custom blend lipsticks and glosses for our clients, their number one question is what colour suits me? It depends on a few factors– skin tone and colouring, eye colour, skin condition (especially around lip area) and hair colour.

All of these factors play a role and influence the correct and most flattering shade for every client. For example, if you are 35 and have fair skin, blue eyes, blonde hair and have minimal sun damage and minimal lip wrinkle, the perfect shade would be bold reds, hot pinks, soft baby pink gloss, mauve nude or pink nude lipstick. Even a peachy soft shade in a gloss would flatter your features. I would avoid brown, auburn, and warm tones- with a fair skin cool tones are more flattering.

If you have brown or hazel eyes, dark brown, black or auburn hair, and your skin has sun damage, this usually leads to deeper lines around the lip and mouth area. The excess sun damage also leads to darker pigment in the skin, so warm tones on the lip would be more flattering. Caution though- depending on the depth of lines, avoid dark and bold lip colours as they will fall into the lip creases and give a “bleeding” effect and look smudged – not a good look. But tones such as darker peach, chocolate, and warm nudes such as taupe and brown are flattering. Warm reds and pinks like corals can look nice too, just ensure they are the right shades for your age and skin conditions. 

It has happened to me more than once, that in the store I will try on so many different lip shades on my hand and when I get home and try them on my lips the colour is completely wrong and unflattering to my complexion.
